MLB Tickets - Mays’ Catch Or Babe’s Shot?

Topics: MLB, sports, tickets, baseball

In the 1954 World Series Willie Mays made a miraculous catch which wound up being captured in one of the most famous sports photographs of all time. In the 1932 World Series Babe Ruth called his home run shot and the photograph became one of the most famous sports images of all time. But which iconic image is better? Which famous photo is more timeless, more classic, more American? Let’s discuss the pros and cons of these two images. When you’re sitting in the stands with your buddies- after having purchased MLB tickets online, of course- you can discuss which photograph you think is more endearing.

Babe Ruth’s “Called Shot”
The story goes like this: The Yankees were playing the Chicago Cubs in the 1932 World Series. The Cubs’ dugout and their fans were mercilessly teasing and taunting Babe Ruth, one of the Yankees’ best players. Ruth was playing along and getting into the taunting right back at them. When he got up to hit in the fifth inning of the game, he made a gesture out towards center field. Some say it was a gesture at the pitcher, some say it was a point to the bleachers where he wanted to hit a home run, and some say it was nothing but a pre-bat ritual.

Whatever the reason, most people think it was The Babe calling his shot, predicting that he’s hit a homer to center field. The next swing he did it. The most famous photo of that moment captures the instant when the ball started to sail into the outfield. The catcher and the umpire are looking up and out at the ball as it zooms towards the bleachers.

Even though their faces are obscured by their masks, one can tell perfectly clear that their expressions are of shock and disbelief. The Babe is still reeling from his powerful swing, his bat crossed over to the other side, his legs stretched out, balanced on his toes and heels. The photo is taken from the right side of the batter’s box, so that from left to right appears the umpire, catcher and then distanced slightly, Babe Ruth. The way they’re situated in the frame, the image seems to tell a story. The catcher and ump are bewildered, and the Babe has obviously just astonished them with an amazing hit. His bright, white uniform and chubby frame shine like a beacon of confidence.

Willie Mays’ “The Catch”
Willie Mays was playing for the New York Giants in the 1954 World Series when he made “The Catch” against the Cleveland Indians. Game 1 was played in the notoriously large Polo Grounds, which made catching fly balls difficult. With two men on base Vic Wertz of the Indians hit a drive to center field that went all the way to the warning track. Willie Mays chased after it, caught it mid-stride, over his shoulder, no-look, stopped on a dime and threw for second base with all his might, stopping what could have easily been a 2 RBI double.

The image of the event captured Willie Mays in mid-air, lunging in stride to meet his target. The ball is just inches above his mitt. The crowd, seated well above, is holding its breath. The huge, blank outfield wall gives the impression of calm and perfectly frames Willie within the frame of the photo. Everything is in suspended animation at this crucial moment.

So which photograph is more iconic? It all depends on your point of view. Babe Ruth’s photo seems to capture the brilliance of the individual. He’s a superstar at the height of his power, able to do the impossible on a whim and a point of his finger, a flick of his wrists. He’s larger than anything the frame. Willie’s photo seems to highlight the heroics of the game itself. Willie is dwarfed by the size of the playing field’s wall, the height and numbers in the crowd. He’s struggling against overwhelming odds to make the play. Do you think the players make the game, or the game makes the players?
