There isn’t a huge amount of information out there about lightbars - much of the time it seems like if you need them, you know what they are and can get on with the serious business of finding the best price for them. However if you are opening a new business with a vehicle fleet, lighting and signalling issues are often an issue which you need to tackle and this lack of information can sometimes be a hindrance to finding the best lighting solution for your business.
Simply put, lightbars are the strip lights that are seen on the tops of some vehicles such as police cars and ambulances, but also on tow trucks and the longer haulage vehicles. The advantage of these over standard flashing beacons is that they cover a larger area, making their coverage greater, enabling them to be better seen, especially in the dark. They also tend to be more secure when attached to the roof of a vehicle than a single flashing beacon as they are fixed by more than one point, making it less likely that they will come loose or be knocked off or stolen.
A vehicle with a lightbar attached to its roof will be clearly visible on a darkened road, signalling to other drivers that it is something which requires their attention. Perhaps it is because it is a long vehicle which will necessitate extra care when overtaking or it may be towing a car, their uses are varied but the clarity of the signal they send is all but guaranteed to garner the attention of other drivers, hopefully helping to keep other road users safe when the vehicle is around them.
So does your vehicle fleet need to be outfitted with lightbars? The easy answer to this question is that it will depend on what your business does. If you run a haulage firm with long vehicles, they would be a worthwhile investment, as they will indicate to other road users the presence of a potential hazard in the event that they try to overtake, the same will hold true if you run a towing firm or similar business. If you run a taxi firm or a company with smaller vehicles, it is less likely that you will need them and their usage may even lead to some legal issues.
Lightbars are an excellent way to signal the presence of your vehicle and to alert the other road users to a potential hazard, but their use is probably best left to larger vehicles, tow trucks and slow moving transports such as road gritters rather than for smaller vehicles such as taxis or mini cabs where their usage may cause confusion on the road.
