Carolina Panthers: The Panthers were one of the surprise teams in the NFC last season after failing to live up to their potential in the few years prior. The team is well-rounded that has playmakers on both sides of the ball. Carolina unleashed one of the more feared backfield duos in the league last season in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. This tandem should wreak havoc on opposing defenses, much like they did last season, and give this team a good chance to move the ball consistently. Quarterback Jake Delhomme had a decent 2008 season, but it looks like his career could be winding down a bit.

He had a disastrous playoff performance against the Cardinals last season and he’ll have to perform well in the early going to make Panthers fans forget about that debacle. The defense on this club is solid, though there is some question concerning what the team will do with defensive end Julius Peppers. Peppers seems to want out of Carolina, but he’s the best player on their defense and makes the kinds of plays that sell NFL tickets.

New Orleans Saints: The Saints have probably the most dynamic offensive attack in the league. Drew Brees took a run at Dan Marino’s seemingly unbreakable single-season passing yards record last season, falling just short. The talent around Brees is not overwhelming, but head coach Sean Payton and Brees really know how to work this offense. It’s not like Brees’ supporting cast is a bunch of slouches or anything, though. With Marques Colston and Lance Moore on the outside, Brees is provided with sure-handed receivers that prove to be reliable for him.

If the team can get tight end Jeremy Shockey going this season, the offense could improve even further. It looks as though Reggie Bush will be sharing time with Pierre Thomas in the backfield, and the spotlight will be on those backs to perform now that fan favorite Deuce McAllister is gone. The team will not succeed if they can’t improve their defense. The team drafted defensive back Malcolm Jenkins to help out, but one player can’t make all the difference.

Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons were a big surprise last season, mostly due to the fantastic play of rookie quarterback Matt Ryan. Ryan and the addition of running back Michael Turner helped turn this franchise around and make the playoffs in 2008. The offense also features a genuine number one wideout in Roddy White and newly-acquired tight end Tony Gonzalez. The defense is coming along nicely under former defensive coordinator Mike Smith and this team could be in store for big things in 2009.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Bucs have a new head coach in Raheem Morris and are in a bit of a rebuilding phase. The team does not have a starting quarterback set as of June 19th, but I’d expect Byron Leftwich to win the job by opening day. The team drafted Josh Freeman in the first round of the draft, but as ready as he may be physically, he needs a lot of work on the mental aspect of his game. Leftwich gives the team the best chance to win now and will have some help on the offensive side of the ball, including wide receiver Antonio Bryant and running backs Derrick Ward and Ernest Graham. The defense is younger than it has been in years past and the coaching staff will be looking toward talented youngsters like Gaines Adams to step up and make plays.

When you have an idea of what you are looking for begin the search. Unless you want to show your dog or breed him, a mixed breed from a shelter or rescue group may be a superb option for you, but if you are thinking of that as a choice be sure that the group allows you an “audition period” in which you can bring the dog to be checked by a vet, and when you can get a first sense of how the animal might fit into your home.

If you choose to purchase a dog from a breeder be sure the kennel and owner are recommended, and be sure they insist on your returning a pup if the match fails. A breeder who washes his hands of his own pups is a breeder in it for the money, not for the love of the breed or the best interests of the dogs or the clients. That again allows a safety net for you and the pup if things fail to work well.

There are many great breeds of dog. The best family dogs, though, are great not because they are one breed or another. They are great because they are fundamentally sound, sane animals, lovingly and sanely treated, and given top notch socialization and training to make sure they can live happily in a human home, with a human family. If you get those things right there are thousands of dogs who just may be good family dogs for you!

The Colorado Rapids and New England Revolution played a tough match on a wet field. New England’s Steve Ralston got his team on the board by scoring a penalty kick in the 18th minute of the game, typing up the game at one. The crowd at Gillette Stadium cheered on their team during the night and the equalizer make the game a very interesting contest. Defender Ugo Ihemelu made a poor decision when he tripped Ralston in the penalty box. Ralston then got even by hammering a shot to the far left corner past Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens. New England coach Steve Nicol was disappointed of the slick playing conditions the field provided the players. It made it difficult to pass the ball, as the Revolution (2-2-4) has registered only two goals in their last four games, and is 0-2-3 in their last five. They have struggled to produce goals this season since they have five starters out of the lineup, including striker Taylor Twellman (neck). Goalkeeper Matt Reis has also missed games due to a concussion, who has been plagued with injuries this year, missing four games earlier in the season because he had inflammation in his right knee.

Forward Conor Casey gave Colorado (3-2-3) the lead in the third minute of the game. Jordan Harvey was able to set up the play and fed a beautiful pass over to Casey. The forward didn’t waste any time - he head butted the pall into the net for the easy goal. It was his fifth goal of the season. New England goalkeeper Brad Knighton was disappointed with his performance in the beginning of the match. The soccer player expressed grief about letting one get past him within the first five minutes of the match. The goalkeeper was relieved that his club could bounce back and tie the game. However, the Revolution desperately needed a victory and three points to keep their hopes up for the next game.

The Rapids came off a two-week layoff and looked a little rusty. They are 1-0-2 in their last three games. Colorado was also disappointed in their performance, wanting to defeat the Revolution and pick up three points. Rapids coach Gary Smith told the press he will take the tie but felt dissatisfied and deflated not pulling off a victory (they had a 15-6 advantage in shots and had plenty of chances to break the deadlock). New England also had some chances, especially when Jeff Larentowicz sent a free kick just wide of the net on the left side in the 25th minute.

Shalrie Joseph also failed to convert a header after Chris Tierney fed him the ball out of left wing in the 67 minute. Colorado finished the game with 10 corner kicks and almost regained the lead in the first half when Mehdi Ballouchy nailed the ball towards the net. Knighton was sharp and make a diving save in the 36th minute.

This offseason has been a strange one for the Denver Broncos. Many were surprised when they decided to fire longtime coach Mike Shanahan. They replaced him with the young Josh McDaniels from the New England Patriots. Fans may have been excited about him from the get go, but when he let it leak that he was trying to deal Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler for former Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel, he showed his rookie colors.

Not only did the deal with Cassel not work out, Cutler was miffed that he wasn’t part of McDaniels’ offensive plan. He was eventually traded to the Chicago Bears, and now former Bear Kyle Orton has been named their starting quarterback. McDaniels now has another headache on his hands as it is being reported that wide receiver Brandon Marshall is asking for a trade and hasn’t shown up to any workouts. There are many places Marshall could end up, but a few look a little more promising.

Denver Broncos: Brandon Marshall has been with the Broncos since he entered the league in 2006. Last season, he tallied 104 receptions, 1,265 yards and six touchdowns. Marshall’s talent has been key to the stats of Cutler last season, and Orton surely would like a target like Marshall. Unlike the Cutler situation, it makes little sense to get rid of Marshall as he isn’t in a position to make many demands. If they want to keep him and keep him happy, all they need to do is offer him more money. The Broncos did just sign wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, however, meaning their need for Marshall isn’t quite as acute as it was before.

Cleveland Browns: There have already been rumors that the Cleveland Browns have a trade for Marshall in the works. The Browns have wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who is already a top name on the team. Marshall’s run-ins with the law are similar to ones the Browns already have to deal with because of other players, and they will likely be hesitant to add another questionable player.

Chicago Bears: With Marshall’s talent and his history of working with Jay Cutler, it may seem logical that the Bears chase after Marshall should he go on the market. Right now, the top receivers on the Bears team are Devin Hester and Earl Bennett, and Brandon Rideau and Rashied Davis are also impressive. Analysts have guessed that the Bears would add a veteran, but Bears from Cutler to coach Lovie Smith have expressed the readiness to go forward with their current WR corps. Also, with the major picks they gave up to get Cutler, they have little bargaining power left.

Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens may not seem to need a new receiver with Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, Demetrius Williams and Marcus Smith, but three of those have already been struggling with injuries this offseason. Quarterback Joe Flacco will likely do well with the current receivers, but adding a proven receiver like Marshall definitely wouldn’t hurt the team.

New York Jets: The Jets were the most vocal suitors of wide receiver Plaxico Burress before he ran into another legal snag, meaning they aren’t afraid of a player with baggage. The Jets have also gone through a reshuffle this offseason, so they are definitely open to new talent.

The story goes like this: The Yankees were playing the Chicago Cubs in the 1932 World Series. When he got up to hit in the fifth inning of the game, he made a gesture out towards center field. Whatever the reason, most people think it was The Babe calling his shot, predicting that he’s hit a homer to center field. The next swing he did it. The way they’re situated in the frame, the image seems to tell a story. The catcher and ump are bewildered, and the Babe has obviously just astonished them with an amazing hit. His bright, white uniform and chubby frame shine like a beacon of confidence.

Willie Mays was playing for the New York Giants in the 1954 World Series when he made “The Catch” against the Cleveland Indians. Game 1 was played in the notoriously large Polo Grounds, which made catching fly balls difficult. With two men on base Vic Wertz of the Indians hit a drive to center field that went all the way to the warning track. Willie Mays chased after it, caught it mid-stride, over his shoulder, no-look, stopped on a dime and threw for second base with all his might, stopping what could have easily been a 2 RBI double.

The image of the event captured Willie Mays in mid-air, lunging in stride to meet his target. The ball is just inches above his mitt. The crowd, seated well above, is holding its breath. The huge, blank outfield wall gives the impression of calm and perfectly frames Willie within the frame of the photo. Everything is in suspended animation at this crucial moment.
